How a Morskie Oko Day from Krakow Works

Four facts that shape every Morskie Oko tour, whichever one you book.

  1. Drive to Palenica Białczańska

Your driver collects you in Krakow early, around 6:00 on the SkyWalk day and 8:00 on the Zakopane day, and drives about two hours to the car park at Palenica Białczańska. The road beyond has been closed to motor traffic since the 1980s, so this is where every tour, private car and coach stops.

  2. Walk about 8 km to the lake

Tatra National Park describes the route as an asphalt road of about 8 km, climbing for about 2.5 hours each way, which adds up to roughly 16 km on foot in a day. Since 1 September 2026 horse carriages go only as far as Wodogrzmoty Mickiewicza, about 2.9 km up, so carriage riders still walk the rest.

  3. Spend what time is left at the shore

The park suggests allowing at least seven hours for the whole outing, including about two hours at the lake, and the path around Morskie Oko takes about an hour. Tours give you less: the SkyWalk day plans about an hour at the lake. Keep a steady pace on the way up if you want time to walk the shoreline.

  4. Finish in Zakopane or head home

The lake-only day drives straight back to Krakow. The Zakopane day adds the Gubałówka funicular, free time on Krupówki and cheese and vodka tastings. The SkyWalk day stops near the SkyWalk Poronin tower, gives about two hours in Zakopane and calls at Chochołów on the way home. Expect to be back after 9 to 13 hours.

MORSKIE OKO GUIDE

Morskie Oko Tours from Krakow Compared

How far you walk, what each tour leaves time for, and who should pick a different day.

If you want Morskie Oko and Zakopane in one day, book Legendary Krakow’s Morskie Oko Lake and Zakopane Day Tour on Viator. It collects you from your accommodation, includes the Tatra National Park ticket for the walk to the lake, then adds the Gubałówka funicular, free time on Krupówki, and a cottage cheese and flavoured vodka tasting, over about 12 hours. It is priced by party size: about $265 each for two, falling to about $93 each for eight, while one person alone pays about $459. It holds 5.0 from 88 reviews on Viator. On GetYourGuide the same day is Morskie Oko and Zakopane Day Trip from $252 per person, with 4.7 from 27 GetYourGuide reviews, so check both for your group and date (prices checked October 2026).

Before you compare prices, be clear about the day itself. Morskie Oko is a walk, not a viewpoint. No tour can drive you to the lake, and the round trip from the car park is about 16 km on foot.

Morskie Oko is a walk

Morskie Oko lies at 1,395 m in Tatra National Park, and it is the largest lake in the Polish Tatras. Cars stop at Palenica Białczańska, about 115 km by road from Krakow, because the road above has been closed to motor traffic since the 1980s after landslide damage. From there, the park describes an asphalt road of about 8 km, climbing for about 2.5 hours each way, and it suggests allowing at least 7 hours for the whole outing, including about 2 hours at the lake.

The horse carriages no longer help much. Since 1 September 2026 the park has been running a pilot in which carriages go only from Palenica Białczańska to Wodogrzmoty Mickiewicza, about 2.9 km, where they used to reach Włosienica at about 6.9 km. Carriage riders now walk the remaining distance to the lake and back down, and in the first weeks of the pilot there was no direct connection to the electric buses. The carriage is never included in a tour price.

The lake itself rewards the effort. A path of about 2.5 km circles it in about an hour, and the PTTK hut by the shore was built in 1908 in the Zakopane style. There are no rubbish bins on the route, so carry your rubbish out, and dogs and drones are banned.

What each tour leaves time for

Three Morskie Oko days run from Krakow on this site, and the difference between them is mostly what happens after the lake.

Legendary Krakow’s Zakopane day is the balanced choice. The listing allows about two hours of walking each way, then moves on to Zakopane for the funicular to Gubałówka and Krupówki. Both the park ticket and the funicular ticket are included, and there is a private ride option at about $312 each for two, falling to about $111 each for eight. See our full breakdown of this tour.

Legendary Krakow’s Morskie Oko Lake Day Trip in the Tatra Mountains is the lake on its own, in about 9 hours. With roughly two hours of driving each way, that leaves about five hours for 16 km of walking and the shore, so expect a short stay at the water and keep a steady pace. It costs from about $156 per person for two to eight travellers on the group option (about $196 private), includes the park ticket, water and a small gift of cottage cheeses, and needs at least two people. It holds 4.9 from 29 reviews on Viator; its GetYourGuide twin Morskie Oko Lake Tour in the Tatra Mountains costs from $167, with 4.5 from 41 GetYourGuide reviews.

KRK-KrakowTours’ Morskie Oko Lake, SkyWalk Poronin and Zakopane is the longest and most independent day, 12 to 13 hours from a pickup around 6:00. The plan is about two hours up, an hour at the lake and two hours down, then a stop near SkyWalk Poronin, a viewing tower near Zakopane, about two hours in Zakopane and a short call at Chochołów on the way back. It is a transfer with free time, not a guided hike. The park ticket (11 PLN normal, 5.50 PLN reduced), SkyWalk entry, meals and any carriage are paid by you, and the listing warns that places in the mountains take cash only. Shared seats cost from about $104 per person, the rate of its Viator twin Morskie Oko Lake, Skywalk and Zakopane; when we checked, only the private option, at $205.50 each for two, was on sale for early October dates on GetYourGuide. It holds 4.9 from 32 GetYourGuide reviews.

One naming trap: SkyWalk Poronin is not the Bachledka treetop walk in Slovakia. That one is sold on a different day, the Slovakia Treetop Walk, Zakopane and Thermal Baths, which does not visit Morskie Oko. Our Tatra Mountains and Zakopane tours page sets those days side by side.

Who should book a different day

Both Legendary Krakow listings ask for at least moderate fitness and are marked unsuitable for anyone who cannot walk about 16 km in a day. KRK-KrakowTours also rules out people with mobility impairments and wheelchair users. The road is paved, but it climbs on the way up and the walk down is just as long.

If that sounds like too much, you can still see the Tatras from Krakow in a day without hiking. The Gubałówka ridge, reached by a funicular that climbs about 300 m, faces the range across the Zakopane valley; our Zakopane cable car tours page and our Zakopane day trip page compare those days. For a mixed group where some want the lake and some do not, a private car gives you more control over timing; our private Zakopane tours page explains how private pricing works.

What to bring and what it costs on the day

  • Comfortable walking shoes, warm layers and a rain layer: the park reported snow and ice at around 2,000 m and muddy lower trails in early October 2026.
  • Water and food. Food is excluded on all three tours; the lake-only day includes water.
  • Cash in złoty for the park ticket on the SkyWalk day, food and any carriage.
  • A plan for daylight: from 1 March to 30 November all park trails are closed from dusk to dawn.

"Fantastic trip up to the mountains of southern Poland. Don’t under estimate the effort but it worth it. Thank you to a driver and guide full of knowledge about the region. Go outside cites and see how beautiful the countryside is"

Kris V

"The whole trip was awesome and enjoyable. We never regret booking this trip as it was well organised and lead by a super friendly and responsible driver who is very attentive and takes care of us well. If you ever booked this trip, please follow driver, Michal, and you will never regret."

Eric C

"The lake was, of course, absolutely stunning. The walk wasn't too difficult apart from a bit of ice, and the view of the tatras the whole way up was amazing. We also loved our guide David. He was always there when we needed him, gave us some extremely memorable sights, and was a really lovely guy! If I did this again I'd want him as my guide."

Amber B

"We had a great day, Matthew was very friendly and gave a lot of info. Can only recommend the tour."
