How a Tatra Mountains Day from Krakow Works

The four choices that separate a viewpoint day from a mountain walk.

  1. Decide: look or walk

Most tours called Tatra Mountains tours show you the range from Zakopane and from the Gubałówka ridge across the valley, reached by funicular with no hiking. Walking into the mountains means a different product: a Morskie Oko trip, with about 8 km each way on an asphalt road inside Tatra National Park.

  2. Choose pickup or meeting point

Krak Tours sells the lead tour from a central Krakow meeting point from $80, or with pickup at your hotel or apartment for about $86. Cracow Top Tours and the Morskie Oko trips collect you from your accommodation, and the private tours start wherever you are staying in Krakow.

  3. The mountain part of the day

On the Gubałówka tours the funicular climbs about 300 m in roughly 3.5 minutes and you get about an hour on the ridge. The view takes in Giewont, Kasprowy Wierch and Czerwone Wierchy in clear weather. On a Morskie Oko day the walk itself fills about five hours of the schedule.

  4. Zakopane, then home

The viewpoint tours give about two hours of free time on Krupówki, the town's main pedestrian street, for lunch at your own cost. Expect 8 to 10 hours door to door. Morskie Oko trips run 9 to 13 hours, and the Slovak treetop walk day about 12 hours.

TATRA MOUNTAINS GUIDE

Tatra Mountains Tours from Krakow Compared

Viewpoint days, the walk to Morskie Oko and the treetop walk in Slovakia are three different trips.

If you want to see the Tatra Mountains without hiking, book Krak Tours’ Zakopane and Tatra Mountains Tour with Gubałówka Cable Car on GetYourGuide. It costs from $80 per person from a central Krakow meeting point, or about $86 with hotel pickup, lasts about 8 hours, and holds 4.8 from 970 GetYourGuide reviews (prices checked October 2026). The day covers a cheese and spirits tasting in Chochołów, photo stops at the Wielka Krokiew ski jump and the wooden Jaszczurówka Chapel, the Gubałówka funicular ticket, and about two hours on Krupówki Street.

That is a viewpoint tour, though, and many people booking a “Tatra Mountains tour” do not realise it. If you want to walk into the mountains, book a Morskie Oko trip such as Legendary Krakow’s Morskie Oko Lake Day Trip in the Tatra Mountains, from about $156 per person on Viator with 4.9 from 29 reviews on Viator. It involves about 16 km of walking.

Three different products under one name

Tours sold as Tatra Mountains trips from Krakow fall into three groups:

  • Seeing the Tatras: a Zakopane day with the Gubałówka funicular. Gubałówka is the ridge on the north side of the Zakopane valley, facing the range across town. You reach its panorama by funicular, with no hiking. These tours cost $74 to $86 and take 8 to 10 hours.
  • Walking into the Tatras: Morskie Oko. The peaks and valleys are inside Tatra National Park and are reached on foot. Cars stop at Palenica Białczańska, and the lake is about 8 km away on an asphalt road. Their from-prices run from about $104 to $265 per person, and they need a moderate level of fitness.
  • The treetop walk in Slovakia: the Slovakia Treetop Walk, Zakopane and Thermal Baths day crosses the border to the Bachledka walkway, then returns for Zakopane and the Chochołów pools. It costs $308 per person.

None of these tours includes Kasprowy Wierch, the high cable car to 1,987 m on the Polish–Slovak border. That lift is closed for maintenance from 19 October to 6 November 2026 anyway. Our Zakopane cable car tours page explains the difference between the two lifts.

Seeing the Tatras: the Gubałówka tours

From the Gubałówka ridge the view takes in Zakopane and part of the Tatra range, including Giewont, Kasprowy Wierch and Czerwone Wierchy, and on clear days the view north reaches Babia Góra and the Pieniny. The PKL funicular is 1,301 m long and climbs about 300 m in about 3.5 minutes. How much you see depends on cloud, and an hour on the ridge leaves some time for it to lift.

The Krak Tours day packs in a highland village, the Chochołów shepherd’s-hut tasting, Wielka Krokiew (a photo stop; entry to the ski-jump complex is not included), Jaszczurówka Chapel, about an hour on Gubałówka and about two hours of free time in Zakopane. The guide is also the driver and speaks English or Polish, with booklets in other languages. The cheese served is smoked sheep’s-milk cheese sold as oscypek; genuine PDO oscypek is made only from May to September. See our breakdown of the Krak Tours day.

Cracow Top Tours’ Zakopane and Tatra Mountains Day Tour with Funicular on Viator is the near match with more time in town. It costs from about $81 per person on the Full package, which includes the funicular, runs 9 to 10 hours and gives about 3 hours of free time in Zakopane. It holds 4.8 from 493 reviews on Viator. The same day sells on GetYourGuide as Krakow: Zakopane Tatra Mountains, Cable Car, Local Tasting from $80, with 4.7 from 355 GetYourGuide reviews, so check both for your date. Avoid the transfer-only option if you want the funicular ticket included.

For a private version, Krakowdirect’s Private Zakopane and Tatra Mountains Full-Day Tour on GetYourGuide starts from $156 per person, with group pricing on the listing worth checking for larger parties. Your own car and English-speaking host add the Pęksowy Brzyzek cemetery and the market below Gubałówka to the usual stops. It holds 4.6 from 34 GetYourGuide reviews. Our private Zakopane tours page compares the private options.

Walking into the Tatras: Morskie Oko

Morskie Oko lies at 1,395 m and is the largest lake in the Polish Tatras. The park service describes the route from Palenica Białczańska as an approximately 8 km climb on an asphalt road, about 2.5 hours each way, and suggests allowing at least 7 hours for the whole outing. Since 1 September 2026 horse carriages run only to Wodogrzmoty Mickiewicza, about 2.9 km up the road, so carriage riders still walk the rest of the way.

Legendary Krakow’s lake-only day runs 9 hours with hotel pickup and includes the park entry ticket, water and a small gift of cottage cheeses. On a 9-hour day with about two hours of driving each way, that leaves limited time at the lake, so keep a steady pace. Bookings need at least two travellers.

KRK-KrakowTours’ Morskie Oko Lake, SkyWalk Poronin and Zakopane is a longer 12 to 13-hour day that adds a stop near SkyWalk Poronin, a viewing tower near Zakopane, about two hours in Zakopane and a short stop in Chochołów. When we checked, its shared departures were not on sale on GetYourGuide for early October; the same day sells on Viator from about $104 per person. Park entry (11 PLN), SkyWalk entry and any carriage ride are paid on the day. It holds 4.9 from 32 GetYourGuide reviews. Our Morskie Oko tours page covers fitness and timing in detail.

The treetop walk in Slovakia

The Bachledka treetop walk sits in Bachledova dolina near Ždiar, on the Spišská Magura ridge at the edge of the Pieniny and Tatra national parks. It is 1,234 m long, runs up to 24 m above the ground and leads to a 32 m observation tower. The connectkrakow.pl day spends about two hours there, about two hours in Zakopane and about two and a half hours at the Chochołów baths, with hotel pickup and admission fees included. Carry a passport or ID card, since the route crosses into Slovakia. From October to May the walkway opens 9:00 to 16:00. It holds 4.7 from 110 GetYourGuide reviews. The baths are closed from 19 to 30 October 2026, so check which baths your date uses.

Which one should you book?

  • First visit, mixed group, no hiking: the Krak Tours Gubałówka day, from $80.
  • More time in Zakopane: Cracow Top Tours, about 3 hours free in town, from about $81.
  • You want to walk in the mountains: a Morskie Oko day, from about $104, and only if everyone can manage about 16 km.
  • One long day with Slovakia and the pools: the treetop walk tour at $308.

Tatra National Park trails are closed from dusk to dawn between 1 March and 30 November, so plan to be off the trail before dark. If you prefer pools to walking, our Zakopane and thermal baths page covers the days that end in the baths.

"This was a lovely day out. A long drive but it was broken up with the visit to a shepherds hut and wooden village going there and a church visit coming back. There were 8 of us plus our guide who was excellent."

"If you are heading to Zakopane from Kraków, book this tour and hope you get Tom as your guide. From the moment he picked our group of six up at our accommodation in a clean, comfy minibus, the entire day was effortless perfection. Tom’s passion and deep knowledge of the Tatra mountains, Polish culture, and the local area shone through everything. He was so engaging, full of great stories, and brought incredible energy. The VIP treatment was unreal. We skipped a 40 minute queue at the Gubałówka cable car, walking straight on, and stopped at all the best scenic viewpoints. The traditional hut stop for cheese and vodka tasting was an absolute highlight. Fresh grilled oscypek paired with local vodka was delicious, and Tom’s great relationship with the locals even scored us private bathroom access. The value for money is unbeatable. Massive thanks to Tom for an unforgettable day!"

Lewis United Kingdom

"Tom was great! very good knowledge and love his energy!. 10/10 guide"

Pascal Germany

"Odour guide Tom was fantastic and so knowledgeable. Lucky with the weather but would have liked to walk the mountains a little bit rather than viewing from a distance. Town and top of funicular very touristy but able to walk around at leisure. Hut and cheese was great as well."

Tim United Kingdom

"Our guide Peter was great. He sent a message the day before of times and location of pickup, and on the day was prompt, introduced himself and friendly. The transport was spacious, air-conditioned and comfortable. Peter was very knowledgeable and on our stops and in the car along the way to the mountains he was great chat. The vodka and cheese was great and the villages and mountains themselves were unreal. Definitely recommend this trip and if you get Peter as your guide it will be even better!"

Judith United Kingdom

"We had such a fantastic day in Zakopane and couldn’t have asked for a better guide than Bart. He was friendly, knowledgeable, professional and made the entire experience enjoyable from beginning to end. Bart went above and beyond to make sure we had a brilliant time. He showed us some incredible places, shared interesting information about the area and made the trip feel personal rather than like a standard organised excursion. He was also great company and made sure everything ran smoothly throughout the day. The scenery was absolutely breathtaking, and Bart helped us make the most of every moment. His helpful attitude and excellent knowledge made the whole experience even more memorable. If you’re visiting Kraków and considering a trip to Zakopane, we would definitely recommend booking with Bart. He made our day one of the highlights of our holiday, and we would happily travel with him again. Thank you, Bart, for such a wonderful and unforgettable day! 🏔️❤️🇵🇱"

Lisa United Kingdom

"Our driver Peter was lovely and welcoming , the journey was lovely and he made sure to give us all the information we needed , he told us all about the mountains , animals that are there and all about the houses. there was some really cute stop offs on the way. the cable car experience was just out of this world , cheese was amazing 😍 that we got more when we got to Zakopane. you must book this trip as it's the cheaper version of Switzerland with the scenery just not the prices. an unforgettable trip that I will remember forever."

Holly United Kingdom
